OFFSHORE CANYON

Yellow Fin, Blue Fin, Big Eye, Swordfish, Mahi Mahi

These overnight 24-48 hour trips offer anglers lots of canyon fishing time. These trips are available July - November weather permitting. Trips may include daytime fishing for Mahi-Mahi or  tuna trolling if there has been hot trolling action. The decision on what to fish for will be a 'captain's choice' depending on conditions. We will then fish for tuna during the 'sunset bite', the entire 'night bite', and the 'morning bite'. We suggest you bring a sleeping bag or blanket and pillow.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED for these trips.

  • Trip times – Generally Canyon Tuna/Mahi Trips depart at 12PM   12:00 PM the following afternoon (the second day for 48 hour trips)

  • Bait – Sardines and Butterfish (provided)

  • Recommended Fishing Tackle:

  • Tuna Rods and Reels – One stand-up type tuna rod with 2-speed 30 or 50 conventional reel (60 to 80-lb test monofilament line), one 7-foot tuna jigging rod with Penn 3/0 or Penn Jigmaster equivalent reel (50-lb test monofilament or 50 to 65-lb test braided line)

  • Tuna Tackle – 50, 60, and 80-lb test fluorocarbon leader material, barrel swivels (provided), 5/0 to 8/0 chunking or circle hooks (6/0 chunking hooks provided), 6 to 8-oz hammer finish diamond jigs, 1 to 8-oz egg sinkers, 8 to 16-oz bank sinkers, rubber bands, Cyalume light sticks (assorted colors)

  • Mahi Rods and Reels – One light-to-medium spinning rod (20-lb test monofilament or 30-lb braided line) for Mahi

  • Mahi Tackle – 1/0 and 2/0 hooks, and assorted small lures and jigs

  • Squid & Bait Rods, Reels, and Tackle – One light spinning rod and reel for squid and bait fishing (8 to 10-lb  monofilament). This can be the same rod and reel used for Mahi.  Bring squid jigs and sabiki-style bait catcher rigs

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: For longer trips, if high winds prevent us from sailing at the scheduled time, we may try to sail later in the day and turn the trip into a standard tuna trip. If we shorten the trip, we will credit you the cost difference

We offer a few different options for these Tilefish trips 16 hour outings, 18-20 hour excursions and 36 hour trips for  diehards.  We run Tilefish trips during the late spring and summer months. These trips depart at night so we can drift for Tilefish and Rosefish during the daylight hours.   We suggest you bring a sleeping bag or blanket and pillow.

  • Rods and Reels – 6½ to 8-foot heavy-duty rod with a single or two-speed conventional reel filled with approximately 500 yards of 50 to 65-lb. test braided Spectra line. We strongly suggest using braided line since we will be fishing in very deep water (up to 1,000 feet)
